MBW changing compaction specifications

JANUARY, 2009 - Effective 2/1/09 MBW Inc. will no longer publish IMPACT and/or COMPACTION FORCE data for its rammers. A recent revision to rammer standards (ISO) has abandoned the impact force approach of LEMB Standard #1 for Vibratory Rammers (see "Beware of Compaction Specifications"). An acceptable alternative method for determining Impact Force could not be reached. A number of rammer manufacturers concurred that impact force data misleads rammer users when applied for comparative and/or fitness-for-use analysis. MBW's literature will be changed as reprinted.

As of 2/1/09 MBW Inc. declines to publish STROKE (vertical travel of tamping shoe) data for its rammers. Rammer stroke is highly variable and therefore misleading for purposes of comparative and/or fitness-for-use analysis. Soil testing is the only reliable means of developing fitness-for-use analysis.

As of 2/1/09 MBW Inc. will footnote vibratory plate specifications as follows: "Centrifugal force is not an expression of compaction effectiveness or force." It has long been MBW's position that centrifugal force is one of the industry's most misleading specifications (see "Beware of Compaction Specifications"). Literature updates as reprinted.
